Thrones Video Game Coming December 2nd

When you play the game of thrones, you win… or you try again.

When the most popular TV show (according to number of votes on IMDb) includes the word “game” in the title, it certainly makes sense that it be adapted for a video game. The first of six episodes will be available from December 2nd on Windows, OS X and PlayStation 4, the 3rd on Xbox One and Xbox 360, the 4th on iOS, and the 9th for PlayStation 3. I’ve already preordered my download from Steam.

From the game’s page on Steam:

This new story tells of House Forrester, a noble family from the north of Westeros, loyal to the Starks of Winterfell. Caught up in the events surrounding the War of the Five Kings, they are thrown into a maelstrom of bloody warfare, revenge, intrigue, and horror as they fight to survive while the seven kingdoms tear themselves apart. You will take on the role of different members of the Forrester household, and determine their fate through the choices you make; your actions and decisions will change the story around you.

It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first Game of Thrones video game (which I didn’t realize until doing the research for this article, after hearing about this new game). A Game of Thrones: Genesis, a strategy video game for PC based entirely on the first book, was released in September 2011 to received mixed reviews (between 50% and 60% positive). Game of Thrones, an action RPG for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 was released in May 2012 to similarly mixed reviews. This game was also based on the books, but also featured a few elements from the TV show, such as two character actor voices from the show as well as the show’s music. I bought this game yesterday for less than $7 and will write a full review when I’ve had a chance to play it. Game of Thrones: Ascent was released in February 2013 for Facebook, iOS and Android.

Unlike these previous games, Game of Thrones – A Telltale Games Series will share more elements with the HBO TV series. This game feature voiceovers and likenesses from more actors than just the two in the 2012 game. In fact, while the game will feature five playable characters from House Forrester (a family found only in the books and not seen in the TV series), the game will actually take place concurrently from the end of the third season until just before the fifth season. Furthermore, the game will feature very familiar locations from the TV series. See for yourself in the trailer below!

I am not really an avid “gamer”. I really just love exploring in-game worlds, such as Middle-Earth or Hogwarts, so I am very excited to explore the various locations in Westeros! Which location are most excited to visit in the video game? Comment below!
