The Desolation of Smaug: Sneak Peek

December 13th simply cannot come soon enough. With this new (third) trailer, we see much that we’ve already seen in the previous two trailers. However, we are given more tidbits that we haven’t seen or heard—tidbits that maintain our excitement for the upcoming film.

We at first hear Bard reciting an adaptation of the song “The King beneath the mountains“, which is in reference to the “King under the mountain”—the line of Kings under the Lonely Mountain from which Thorin is descended:

The Lord of silver fountains, The King of carven stone,
The King beneath the mountain shall come into his own
And the bells shall ring in gladness at the mountain king’s return
But all shall fail in sadness and the lake will shine and burn

However, Bard does not reading (or singing) it like a song, but instead like a prophecy. The first “stanza” remains mostly intact from the original text, except that two lines are inverted. The second and third stanzas are not heard, or are perhaps omitted entirely from the movie. The last stanza, however, is somewhat different from the original, which reads:

The streams shall run in gladness,
The lakes shall shine and burn,
All sorrow fail and sadness
At the Mountain-king’s return!

Certainly, the original portrays the situation a bit more optimistically. Besides that, the original is meant to welcome Thorin back to the Lonely Mountain again. It is found, after all, in the chapter titled “A Warm Welcome”. However, in every trailer so far, we see and hear Bard telling Thorin, “You have no right to enter that mountain,” which causes Thorin to reply, “I have the only right.” I am not saying that it is wrong to spin it this way—after all, it increases the conflict, and it contextually makes more sense with the next movie, as everything is leading to the Battle of the Fire Armies, which is almost guaranteed to appear in the third film.

What other new things do we see and hear? Let’s make a list:

  • More images of Lake-Town. Cinematic views of buildings. People working in docks.
  • Men from Lake-Town with torches and weapons. More men with torches and weapons.
  • Bard’s family, which certainly increases his character depth from what we see of Bard in the book.
  • A short glimpse of the “Great Eye”. It’ll be interesting to see how this is tied to the “Necromancer”.
    • After re-watching the second trailer, I saw it there too, but I must not have noticed it before.
  • The dwarves look at Dale. Bilbo asks, “What is this place?” Balin replies, “The Desolation of Smaug.”
  • Many more glimpses inside Erebor, but no full shots of Smaug himself. We only see him covered in gold or shooting flames, which are shots that we’ve seen in previous trailers already.
    • We do, however, hear Smaug, who is voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, say, “I am king under the mountain.” He spoke a lot more in the previous trailer.
  • Thranduil, portrayed by Lee Pace, says, “You seek that which will bestow upon you the right to rule—the Arkenstone.” If this line sounds familiar, it’s because it was also featured in the first trailer, but the last part—the Arkenstone—was not heard originally.  This trailer puts more emphasis on needing to find the Arkenstone in order for Thorin to reclaim the throne within Erebor. Thorin also makes clear that finding the Arkenstone is the reason they have Bilbo.
  • Thorin says, “If this is to end in fire, then we will all burn together.”

Thorin certainly doesn’t sound very pleasant! As the book reveals, Thorin is overcome with greed upon entering the mountain, which is definitely a weakness among dwarves—not just Thorin.
